QEH Ophthalmologist and Retinal Specialist Dr. Ibrahim Elaraoud has performed the first retinal surgery in PEI — and it was made possible by generous donations from the Island community.
Dr. Elaraoud and his team are specially trained to perform retinal surgeries but, prior to the fundraising campaign, they lacked the necessary medical equipment.
With the help of donors, including a generous anonymous gift, the QEH Foundation raised more than $350,000 to fulfill the need for several critical eye care pieces including retinal repair equipment. As a result, many Islanders will no longer have to leave PEI for sight-saving surgery.
