Longtime women’s Panthers assistant coach Lance Jones was honoured Friday
The UPEI men’s hockey Panthers(14-7-2), minus three of their top scorers, lost a third straight game, 2-0 at Dalhousie. The Tigers scored twice in the final period to secure the win. Goalie Alex MacDonald made 34 saves. Dillon Boucher and Matt Green scored. UPEI stays in second place in the AUS, two points up on Saint Mary’s. The Huskies lost, 6-1 facing first place UNB.
UPEI is without T.J. Shea and Matt Brassard who are with Canada at the World University Games. Kyle Maksimovich is out with a reported shoulder injury.
The women Panthers (13-6-1) won their sixth in a row, getting by Moncton, 3-2 on a late third period goal from Chloe McCabe who was set up by game star McKinley Nelson who had two assists. Taylor Gillis with her 11th and Orianna McNeil had given the Panthers a 2-0 lead before Moncton tied the game in the second.
Prior to the game, Panthers assistant coach Lance Jones was honoured with a watch to mark his 10 years as a coach with UPEI. He was joined by his entire family for the centre ice ceremony.
UPEI (7-5) over St. FX, 83-67 in women’s basketball. Aiden Rainford and Devon Lawlor had 16 points each.
The men Panthers lost 89-58 against the #6 X-Men. Elijah Miller had 13 points.Deon Ejim had 21 points for X.
The Truro Bearcats skated past the Summerside Western Capitals(20-19-1), 7-2 in the MHL. Carter McCluskey had a hat trick in the win. William Irvine and newly acquired Jack Campbell scored for the Caps.
The Moncton Flyers stopped the Kensington Wild, 6-1 in Major Under 18. The Flyers led 6-0 before Ryder Howatt spoiled the shutout attempt. Austin Sanchez had the game winner.
Kings County over Mid Isle, 6-2 in PEI U18. Thomas MacEachern scored twice including the game winner and had an assist. Spencer Miller added two goals.
The Kensington Vipers stopped the Sherwood Metros, 4-2 in Jr. B. Reese Wyand had the game winner.
Pittsburgh won 4-1 over Ottawa in the NHL. Jake Guentzel scored twice and set up another for the Penguins. Colorado dumped Vancouver, 4-1. Mikko Rantanen had the game winner. First star Nathan MacKinnon had two assists.
