Veteran Boxing Manager Howard Watts talks with Matthew Mahood during Saturday’s Bronze medal match
Matthew Mahood put up a great battle but lost the bronze medal match in the 57 kg class to Ontario’s Simon Joseph Romero in boxing at the Dome in Summerside on Saturday night. Mahood just came up short in gaining PEI’s third medal at the Canada Games.
The PEI women’s judo team finished fourth in the team competition losing 7-0 to New Brunswick.
PEI goes for 7th place in men’s curling this morning after dropping Quebec, 9-2.
Tyler Smith’s PEI rink got by New Brunswick’s Scott Jones at the Brier in London, Ontario, 9-8 to improve to 1-1.
The Holland College Hurricanes will meet the St. Thomas Tommies in the ACAA men’s basketball final this afternoon in Fredericton. The Canes downed Crandall, 90-74 in the semi-final. John Menzies led with 20 points.
The Charlottetown Islanders lost their second game on a weekend road trip in Shawinigan, 6-2 to the Cataractes in the Q. Michael Horth got his 25th goal.
The Kensington Vipers clinched first place in Jr. B with an 8-3 over Kings County in Montague.
The Boston Bruins made it 10 straight wins as they got by the NY Rangers, 4-2. Charlie Coyle had a goal and assist. David Pastrnak scored his 44th of the season. Boston leads the NHL with 49 wins.
Toronto lost 4-1 in Vancouver as the Canucks scored two short handed goals. Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller scored with a man down. Toronto lost newly acquired Ryan O’Reilly who blocked a shot. Auston Matthews also stopped one but he returned.
Winnipeg over Edmonton, 7-5. Josh Morrissey scored twice.
Ottawa stopped Columbus, 5-2. Tim Stuetzle had two goals. The Senators are tied with Buffalo and Florida for 5th in the NHL East.
The New York Islanders over Detroit, 4-1. Noah Dobson had one assist.
Toronto went to overtime to get by Washington, 118-109 in the NBA. Gary Trent Jr. had 26 points.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. won’t join the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic after finding out he has minor inflammation in his right knee. The Jays bounced Detroit, 18-5 yesterday, scoring 13 runs in the fourth. They were led by rookie Vinny Capra who homered and had 6 RBIs in the Grapefruit League Game.
