On Wednesday, a Green Third Party motion on government to eliminate bridge and ferry tolls for Islanders who must travel off-Island for medical appointments passed unanimously in the Legislature. Green MLA Matt MacFarlane, who sponsored the motion, says accessing healthcare is already challenging for many, and the added burden of a $50 to $90 toll only adds to the financial strain on patients and their families. He says off-Island travel is often unavoidable for Islanders due to the lack of certain specialized medical services on PEI, and eliminating tolls for patients would not add unreasonable financial strain on the provincial budget. He’s calling on government to act on the decision immediately.
