Owner of JEMS Boutique, Founder of PEI Fashion Week

Hold your breath, it’s time to step into that store and try on those cute pair of jeans. The mere idea of it being quite daunting. Holding them in your hands wondering if the sizes aren’t what they are labeled to be. Sometimes, things don’t fit you the way they do on the mannequin. Sometimes, our own self-confidence prevents us from seeing just how beautiful we truly are. Imagine how that shopping experience would be if stores and cloths were designed to truly make you feel and look beautiful in every way possible, with the knowledge that every woman’s body is different and everyone deserves to feel confident.
That is what Julia Campbell has set out to do. With JEMS Boutique, Julia has always been rooted in the simple but powerful mission: helping women feel beautiful, confident, included, and celebrated for exactly how they are. For too long, fashion has asked women to change themselves in order to belong. Julia chose to turn that idea on its head. She built a boutique that belongs to the women who walk through the doors, women of different ages, different bodies, different stories, and different generations, all finding pieces of themselves reflected in the mirrors.
What began as a business grew into a community.
Customers became familiar faces, mothers returned with their daughters, friends arrived together, and all left standing a little taller. That is how Julia measures her success, not in the sales but rather in the moments where someone says they finally feel comfortable shopping. The moments where someone trusts the environment that she has created enough to share it with someone else they love. For her, that is success.
But like any entrepreneur, her journey has had some struggles. Retail is unpredictable, shaped by shifting trends and economic uncertainties that often-hit small businesses first. And as a small business, she carries the weight of being everything at once. She holds the position of buyer, creative director, stylist, business owner, all while balancing growth and sustainability both financially and personally. Entrepreneurship can be isolating, yet each challenge only sharpened her vision, clarifying what truly matters: connection.
This knowledge has helped guide her to reach beyond JEMS Boutique.
As the founder, creative director, and organizer of PEI Fashion Week, Julia has created a platform that did not previously exist on PEI. It celebrates Island creativity while pushing the industry toward something more honest. She took the word “connection” and envisioned fashion not as something exclusive, but as something rooted in community. This idea helped her create a stage where local designers, artists, and everyday women could see themselves represented with reflections of real life. It has given room for Annie Martin from RoseWolf Creations, Eastwood Ave, Michnat, and more to showcase their creations, representing Mi’kmaq, Afrocentric, and other local roots through a PEI runway.
Working alongside Island creators allows her to weave storytelling into fashion, blending clothing with culture, identity, and pride. She believes deeply that when small businesses and artists support each other, they strengthen the entire community.
This belief extends even further towards local initiatives, like fundraising for First Impressions, a volunteer-run organization providing clothing for those in need. She also supports Blooming House, a women’s shelter within Charlottetown. Beyond that, she’s an incredible mentor for other local business owners, participating in community panels like the Empower PEI Summer Startup Summit, focusing on community and culture. But while much of fashion is created to be seen, she contributes to her community in many other ways that may never be publicly seen. That is the true understanding and value of community and partnership.
Her hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed. She has received a Reconciliation Recognition Award from Abegweit First Nation and Lennox Island First Nation in 2025, recognizing her during Indigenous Awareness Week for her work in building the community.
On Prince Edward Island, the trust that is built, word that travels, and relationships that are created matter. Knowing women across the Island feel safe, valued, and confident in the environment that she has created is something Julia carries humbly.
To her, JEMS Boutique is far more than clothing, it is belonging, inclusivity, and confidence.
