Sarah Bennetto O’Brien is the Chef, Founder, and CEO of The Handpie Company, a woman-owned food business rooted in the heart of Prince Edward Island. In 2017, she set out with a simple but powerful mission: to bring hearty, locally sourced, handheld comfort food to freezers near and far. What began as a vision has grown into something far greater, a thriving culinary brand built on quality, community, and sustainability.
A Red Seal Chef and graduate of the Culinary Institute of Canada, Sarah fell deeply in love with PEI’s rich food culture. Inspired by traditional pasties and filled with Maritime ingredients, her handpies are more than meals, they are a celebration of place, tradition, and the farmers and producers who make it all possible. Every recipe reflects her belief that food should feel like home: warm, nourishing, and made with intention.
Under Sarah’s leadership, The Handpie Company has grown from a beloved local startup into a respected brand known not only for its delicious products, but for its unwavering commitment to community. Through the Pie It Forward initiative, that commitment comes to life. Every month, handpies are donated to local food banks, shelters, and community spaces, places where a warm, hand-held meal can make all the difference in the world. For Sarah, food security is not just an idea; it is folded into the very heart and soul of the company.
Her passion for food, innovation, and giving back proves that success is strongest when it is rooted in heart and home. Sarah’s dedication has earned her the Sobeys Best New Local Supplier Award in 2023 and the opportunity to share her expertise at Food and Beverage Atlantic’s 2025 conference, where she spoke on the panel “After the Listing – How to Move Your Product Once It Hits the Shelf.”
