Canada White went to overtime to win the gold in the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge, 2-1 over Team USA before a sellout crowd at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown. Cameron Schmidt scored the deciding goal on a breakaway. Joey Baumuller put Canada ahead, 1-0 less than two minutes into the game. Charlie Trethewey tied the game for the US on a power play halfway through the third. Canadian goalie Jack Ivanovic made 34 saves in the nets for the win. It’s the first Canadian gold medal in the tourney since 2017.
The bronze medal game saw Sweden down Czechia, 6-3. Ivar Stenberg scored the game winner in the third period.
Holland College won its first national medal in women’s soccer winning 1-0 over Champlain Saint-Lambert in the bronze medal match in Summerside. Misha Isoyari scored the winning goal at the 69 minute mark.
Seneca College won the gold, 1-0 over Sainte-Foy.
The Summerside Western Capitals are Maritime Junior Hockey League best 11-1-4 taking their 8th straight game, 3-0 over Yarmouth.
Reid Vos scored the game winner in the second. Brandon Abbott made 30 saves in the net.
The Kensington Wild upset first place Moncton, 5-2 in Major U18. Ethan Dickson, who had a natural hat-trick, scored the winner in the second period. The Wild now tied for second with Charlottetown and closing in on the Flyers for first place.
UNB shutout UPEI, 3-0 in AUS women’s hockey. The Panthers slip to 3-9.
William Nylander scored his 10th of the season and Noah Gregor had a goal and assist as Toronto dropped Vancouver, 5-2 in the NHL. Nylander continues his team record 15-game point scoring streak to start the season.
Montreal edged Boston, 3-2 in overtime on a goal by defenseman Kaiden Guhle. Brad Marchand had a goal and assist for Boston.
Ottawa over Calgary, 4-1. Drake Batherson had a goal and assist. That ends the Senators five game losing streak at home.
Edmonton dropped Seattle, 4-1. Zack Hyman had three goals as the Oilers scored all four in the first period.
UPEI stopped UNB, 87-73 in AUS men’s basketball. Kamari Scott had 31 points.
The women’s Panthers lost 65-54 to the Reds. Lauren Rainford scored 18 points.
Holland College lost both games at Mount Saint Vincent.
The Mystics won 105-79 in the women’s and 109-71 in the men’s.
Lauren Armstrong led the Hurricanes with 22 points in the women’s loss. Ambrose Johnson had 16 for the Canes in the men’s.
Boston over the Toronto Raptors, 117-94 in the NBA In Season tourney. Jaylen Brown led the Celtics with 29 points.
An upset in the CFL Eastern final as Montreal surprised first place Toronto, 38-17.
In the West, Winnipeg over the BC Lions, 24-13.
That puts the Alouettes and Blue Bombers in next Sunday’s Grey Cup game.
The UNB Red Bombers won the Atlantic Football championship game, 31-28 over the Dalhousie Tigers.
Tobins Brown took the feature race for fillies and mares at Red Shores in Charlottetown in 1.57/1 with David Dowling in the bike. Marc Campbell had four winners and Jason Hughes had three. Both drivers are now tied with 121 wins this season.
