The PEI Fishermen’s Association says it’s disappointed and concerned with the recent announcement by the Federal Fisheries Minister regarding the allocation of mackerel quota for bait among fishers in the Atlantic Provinces and Quebec. The Minister announced 470 tonnes of mackerel quota for bait, a decision that impacts 7,067 fishers across the Atlantic Provinces and Quebec. The Association says the allocation fails to meet the needs and demands of fishing communities, as 470 tonnes equates to approximately 145 pounds per fisher. The Association is asking the Minister to work collaboratively with industry stakeholders to ensure a fair and equitable allocation that supports the vitality of fishing communities.
