Special Olympics Athlete, Gold Medalist

On Prince Edward Island, where winter is long and cold and many Islanders complain, Ellen MacNearney found where she belongs. Through Special Olympics PEI, she discovered a community built on friendship, encouragement, and belief. The competitions brought excitement and purpose, but just as important were the connections she formed with athletes and mentors from around the world, people who helped her see her own strength.
Special Olympics PEI gives athletes with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to train, compete, and grow, not only as athletes, but as leaders and individuals. For Ellen, it became the pathway to discovering what she was capable of. Through dedication and courage, she transformed opportunity into achievement, carrying her Island’s spirit onto the world stage.
Her journey was not without challenges. Even the smallest details, like finding properly fitting, high-quality ski equipment, could become difficult obstacles. Equipment often had to be tested over time, and by the time she knew whether it truly worked for her, she had no choice but to adapt and push forward.
These moments demanded patience and resilience, and Ellen met them with quiet determination. Each setback became another reason to continue, another opportunity to grow stronger.
That resolve carried her across oceans. Representing Canada at the Special Olympics World Winter Games, Ellen rose among the best in the world. In 2013 in Pyeongchang, South Korea, she earned one gold and one bronze medal in cross-country skiing, announcing her arrival as a world-class athlete. Years later, in Turin, Italy 2025, she reached an even greater milestone, winning three gold medals in 5 km, 7.5 km, and 4 x 1km relay cross-country skiing. This amazing feat led her to become the first Special Olympics PEI athlete to capture three golds at a single World Games.
In those defining moments, she carried more than her own dreams, she carried the pride of her entire community. Knowing Prince Edward Island and all of Canada were cheering her on strengthened her belief that she could do it, that she belonged there. Her excellence earned national recognition when she was named Special Olympics Canada’s Female Athlete of the Year not once, but twice, an extraordinary honour that reflects not only her performance, but her perseverance and leadership.
Today, Ellen continues to train and compete with the hope of returning to future World Games with the hope that she will inspire someone else to believe in themselves, too. She understands that true victory is not measured only in medals, but in courage to try, to persist, and to be unapologetically yourself.
Ellen MacNearney stands as one of Prince Edward Island’s most inspiring athletes, a woman whose strength was built through perseverance, whose courage carried her across oceans, and whose spirit continues to uplift everyone around her. She represents the very best of PEI: resilience, humility, and heart.
