The provincial and federal governments are spending nearly six-million dollars each to help survivors of gender-based violence cover rent, mortgage payments and other housing expenses. PEI is the fourth province in Canada to partner with Ottawa through the Canada Housing Benefit for the survivors of gender-based violence program. The province says this benefit is expected to support roughly 195 people. They will be able to receive up to 72-hundred dollars annually — and a one-time, non-repayable damage deposit of up to two-thousand dollars.
